Colette

The career of Colette, one of the best-known French writers, started actually by sheer coincidence. In 1893 (when she was 20 years old), she married a well-known Parisian writer Willy. At his request, she started writing a semi-autobiographical series about Claudine. “Claudine at School” opens the cycle – first published under his name. The book shocks with the story of a romance between a student and her teacher but gets immensely popular at the same time. The 2018 film (Colette portrayed by Keira Knightley) depicts the transformation of the writer from a meek wife into an emancipated and self-conscious woman. Colette is not afraid to explore her bisexuality and corporeality or even tell about it outright, under the guise of her heroines. Finally, she starts to fight for legal recognition of her as the author of her beloved cycle about Claudine.
It’s worth mentioning, that one of her partners is Max – a transman, who, from the moment he reaches adulthood, functions as a man in the Parisian art world. Moreover, two supporting roles in the film – and it’s still a total sensation in American cinematography, were played by trans actors: Jake Graf and Rebecca Root.
