Maspalomas

A moving story about freedom that can be lost even after years of struggle. Vicente is 76. Twenty-five years ago, he left his wife, came out, and moved to Gran Canaria, where under the sun of Maspalomas, he built a new, happy life with his partner. But once he falls into a coma after a stroke, he wakes up in a completely different world: his daughter moves him to a care home in Donostia. Without his partner. Without his life. Without his truth.

In this new place, Vicente quickly realises that it is easier not to say anything. Not to explain. Not to justify himself. And so, almost imperceptibly, he begins to slip back into the closet, giving up the identity he fought for over half his life.

This subtle, deeply poignant film asks the question: can one ever truly “come out” once and for all? And what happens when a system – even one that appears to be caring – begins to erase our identity? ’’Maspalomas” is a tender yet uncompromising portrait of queer ageing, desire and dignity.
