Layla
A glitter‑dusted, full‑throttle romantic comedy with real bite. Its title character, Layla – an Arab drag queen – is trying to find her place in the world and falls truly in love for the first time. And love, as we all know, has a habit of turning everything upside down. In this relationship, Layla both loses and finds herself, teetering between religious tradition, queer identity, and the need to be fully authentic.
Director Amrou Al‑Kadhi delivers a wildly funny yet surprisingly tender story. The film pulses with color, fantastic music, and brilliant production design, and the chemistry between the leads practically crackles off the screen. It’s a tale about performance – in drag, in love, and in everyday life – but also about what remains when all the masks finally come off.
Fresh, uncompromising, and disarmingly honest cinema that has you laughing one moment and hits you straight in the heart the next.
