Unbowed (Insubmissas)

‘Women’s cinema, women’s voice’ – short films that stay in your head and under your skin.

Four short films, four women’s voices, four stories about those whose narratives are too often overlooked. In this unique anthology, female directors from underrepresented groups in Brazilian cinema reach for literary gems from the late 19th century and translate them into a contemporary, visual language. Death, healing, marriage, desire – these are the leading themes of stories in which women confront their past to reclaim their freedom.

This is an unruly, sensual and experimental cinema – at times as gentle as a whisper, at times as sharp as a knife. Not only for the LGBT+ community, but for anyone who has ever felt ‘outside the pale’. It’s moving, seductive and unforgettable.
