Sad Jokes

Joseph and Sonya form an unusually close bond while raising their infant son together. As he, as a film director, balances obsession with a new project and the shadow of a past relationship, Sonya struggles with depression and her condition leads to hospitalisation. Faced with this situation, Joseph is faced with a challenge: how to reconcile his father’s day-to-day responsibilities with his artistic ambitions and inner demons?

Director Fabian Stumm, who simultaneously plays the role of Joseph, balances sadness and comedy with remarkable dexterity, creating an unforgettable acting performance. His vulnerability is revealed in every gesture and every awkward smile Joseph makes. He doesn’t traditionally dominate the stage, but it’s the softness he exudes that makes him incredibly compelling. This warm softness makes ‘Sad Jokes’ resemble the loving embrace that comes after crying. It is a film that not only understands you, but also allows you to feel understood.
