Pride vs. Prejudice

Delwin Vriend’s story is an inspiring tale that changed the course of human rights history. Vriend, initially a reluctant activist, dared to stand up to government discrimination after he was fired for being gay. His determination and courage led to a landmark Supreme Court of Canada ruling in 1998. The ruling not only overturned prejudice in Alberta, but also set a global precedent for protecting the rights of LGBTQ+ people.

Known today for the world’s highest level of inclusivity and support for the LGBTQ+ community, Canada is an example of what can be achieved through courage and a successful fight for justice. The country also offers the best refugee programme for LGBTQ+ people, offering hope and support to those who are persecuted. This makes it all the more worthwhile to look at the situation in Poland, where the protection and rights of LGBTQ+ people still need to be fought for and committed to.

Vriend’s case reminds us all that resistance, pressure and engagement make sense. Any change is possible and often starts with an individual so that it grows into a collective rebellion, and from that it is only a step to revolution! All we have to do is act together – as citizens, community activists and organisations fighting for equality. It might be worth looking at Canada not only with admiration, but also as a role model?
