Winter Boy (Le lycéen)

Guided by the bright star of Juliette Binoche, as well as the director, Christophe Honoré (i.a. “Man at Bath”, “The Beautiful Person”), “Winter boy” describes the story of Lucas, who’s 17 and torn apart between his brother who just left the family house to live in the capital city and his mother, with whom he is left alone. The young man is having a rough time after his father’s death, while fitting sequent pieces of himself during the trip to Paris. “My life is a wild animal”, he says. Seventeen is a wild age, when everything you’re living through is absolutely intensive – friendships, romantic fascinations, even the experience of grief.

Christophe Honoré made a film that is largely a personal journey. Impersonating his late father, the director focuses on relations between the character and his family, exploring the strange and unique time when one wants to live to the fullest, despite their sadness. As the director says, “this film is about how to turn indisputable tragedy into another form of suffering, that would allow us at least to weakly smile”.
